The Hershey Man can.....

This is pretty neat - an ice-breaker for a bored class
of children or even tired adults who need to take five.

Don't tell me your age; you probably would tell a falsehood
anyway - but the Hershey Man will know! So, here goes...

YOUR AGE BY CHOCOLATE MATH

DON'T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST!
It takes less than a minute
Work this out as you read ...
Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out!

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you
would like to have chocolate (more than once but less than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50 -- I'll wait while you get the calculator

5. If you have already had your birthday this year
add 1756 .... If you haven't, add 1755.

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number

The first digit of this was your original number
(i.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week).

The next two numbers are

YOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it is!!!!!)

(This is the only year (2006) it will ever work, so
spread it around while it lasts.)

  2. Math problems! I love it! Let me try my hand on this...

Let x be the number of times we wish to have chocolate in a week.

Expressing the problem in mathematical terms

    1) Multiply with 2, plus 5, then multiply by 50, we get
    (2x + 5) X 50 = 100x + 250

    # The notion here is to get the x to be on the place of hundredths.

    2) Depending whether we have birthday or not, add 1756 or 1755, we get
    Solution S1 --> 100x + 250 + 1756 = 100x + 2006
    Solution S2 --> 100x + 250 + 1755 = 100x + 2005

    # The notion here is to get the last number to become the current year we are in. (The difference is to separate those who have had birthday and those who haven't)

    3) Subtract the 4 digit year we were born
    Solution S1 --> 100x + 2006 - 19aa
    Solution S2 --> 100x + 2005 - 19aa

    # The notion here is to get our age by subtracting our birth year from current year. Note that the operation does not affect the 100x, which gives the "x" at the hundredth place.

Our solution would be something like xbb (bb is our age)

Oh ya... I think, to modify the question so that it works for other years than 2006, we just nee to modify the "1756 and 1755" part accordingly.

Let's look at step 2, leave the 100x alone, observe that we already have 250 in our hand. To make the last number to become our current year, just add accordingly. For example, if we wish to do this calculation in year 2007, just change the values "1756 and 1755" to "1757 and 1756" respectively.

erm... i think i've probably bore the whole world to death by now... you can wake up now.

    Run, yd, run!

  5. *blush* l b, you overpraised me.

Math problems are more inclined towards the field I am studying, so I am more familiar with the workings of the algebra... Had a bit of unfair advantange here.

There are many other broad-based tests that reflect more roundedly about an individuals, I might suck at those. :-)

Hershey! Cadbury! Chocolate! I love them! Now I MUST find the golden ticket to Willy's factory!

  8. Actually, I thought it was pretty obvious that the whole point of the math problem was to keep the number you put in at the beginning constant so that it winds up being spat back at you in the end. There are card tricks that use the same philosophy, after all.

Kudos to YD for actually going through the numbers (literally as well as figuratively).

    My brain STILL hurts.

  9. IML, that's a neat formula, isn't it? Glad you liked it.

YD, now, isn't that putting your education to good use. haha...
    Great analysis. Thanks.

MM, nevermind, just play us some music.

  10. LB, or Poker or any other game.

YD, you're banned from the gaming table. Just concentrate on the chocolates, will you? ;)

  11. Winn, sweetie dear, sorry to spoil the fun, but, I don't do tags, haven't you heard?

Come to think of it, Hershey (chocolates for that matter) and math do go together - they make each other happy, happy, happy.

  12. Good job YD, you chose the right subject to major in.

It also works if you want no chocolate (like me - but K will eat my share). I just get my age at the end.

YD, is it really Willy's chocolate factory you are interested in is it Johnny Depp? ;^)

  13. Hiya, Kurakat79, thank you for visiting. Nice nick. Hope you'll be back.

MM, yes, the constants upfront and the variables at the end. Clever girl, YD.

  14. Pandabonium, haha...that's a good one.

Yeah, YD, is it Johnny Depp?
Talk about Johnny Depp, has anyone noticed the shape of his lips? I think he's got really nicely-shaped lips to the point of them being pretty? Honest! Take a look. Sorry, can't help it. I don't have a fetish for lips but his strike me as prettily inviting? heheheh.......

  15. wah YD so smart one.. hehe..

    u rocket scientist har????

  16. I allergic to dark choco..

sighhhh... my calculation is zero.. so YD .. u are wrong..

  17. Wow! Interesting! Is this how they play mind tricks and some magic? I was wondering if I should wait for next year to see if it still works. But yd laid it out real fine. Now I can unflex my brain. Thinking makes my shoulders stiff.

  18. Dear Robin, if you are zero, would that make you a zygote?! hehe...

Agus, stiff shoulders, eh? Then you need more night-outs at the clubs. Don't forget the ID though. ;)

So, how's the going, man? Are you nicely settled in in the new office?

  19. whoa! while i was sleeping, whirlwind swept over this place..

panda, shhhh... don't tell anybody about Johnny! (too late)

hehe Happy, I do notice about his lips too! ahhh... sexy. I wonder, do only girls notice that? I noticed that in his old movie, Edward the scissors hand, and was thinking he was such a sweet young man...

    OOOOPPPS, enough girls talk.

  20. YD, hehe... so I'm not alone. High-5!

Edward Scissorhands, yes, I remember him and Winona Ryder. They were a couple then and at the height of their relationship, he even had her name tattooed on his behind. Not sure whether he still has it. Nah..........

  21. opps i forgot!:P

I'm sure it's all behind him now.

    hyuk hyuk hyuk bwaaaahahahaha...uhh...

You'll have to forgive me. I'm a little distraught right now...

  23. MM, I agree. That "behind thingy" is definitely all behind him now.

Are you still "a little distraught" about not exercising enough of that 'S' factor of the 'S&M' equation? hmmmmm..... Cheer up! It could have been worse.
