Plane crash at Nevada Air Race

A vintage World War Two fighter plane crashed near the grandstand at a Nevada air race on Friday, killing at least two people including the elderly pilot and injuring more than 50 others, officials said.

The plane, a P-51 Mustang dubbed the "Galloping Ghost" that was being flown by well-known pilot Jimmy Leeward, crashed into a box seat area in front of the main grandstand at the Reno Air Races, said Mike Draper of public relations firm R&R Partners, which represents the race. More..

  1. A very sad day.

As a pilot and aviation fan, I've been to many airshows over the years, though not the Reno Air Races. It is not unusual for there to be a crash there, and even loss of a pilot's life - it is a very dangerous business after all.

But I can't remember a case where anyone watching the race was injured, let alone killed.

I hope they can determine what went wrong and use that knowledge to limit the probability of it happening again, and more importantly learn to prevent such an accident, should it occur again, from harming people in the stands.
