KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 359 people have been hanged since 1970. Many of them trafficked in drugs, some of them like notorious bomoh Mona Fandey were involved in murders and a number committed firearms robberies.

Malaysia is one of 76 countries in the world where the death penalty is still part of the law-and-order regime.

The Bar Council said over the weekend that it would campaign for the death penalty to be abolished, arguing that the punishment was barbaric, inhumane and an insufficient deterrent. More...The NST

  1. hmmm,,,,, this seem to be the same problem in Singapore.

but I cannot understand the argument that death penalty is barbaric, inhumane and an insufficient deterrent.

Would life sentence acheive the objectives?

I wonder which is more barbaric and inhumane... To be lock up forever and ever, waste of tax payer money.

as for deterrent, unless those on death parole are poked with needles everyday, I dun see the point...

  2. Robin, I was thinking more along the lines of the right (or not) of taking another's life. Your arguments do make sense though. Am I glad I'm not the one making the decision.

  3. If it is wrong for one person to kill another, how can it be right for the state to do it. I don't believe in killing - war, death penalty, murder. It is all the same.

the purpose of life imprisonment is to protect society. The huge number of people who have been sentenced to death and then found to be innocent when DNA testing was invented proves innocent people are being executed.

    It's just plain wrong.

  4. Dear Pandabonium, you have such a kind heart. Do we as fellow human beings have the right to take another's life? Innocent people being executed... no word can adequately nor aptly describe the emotion!
