Thunderbirds Airshow


I haven't been to an airshow but I am sure airshows are a blast to watch.

Apparently, there was an air demonstration squadron of the US Air Force (USAF) Thunderbirds performing aerobatic formations and solo flying in specially marked USAF Thunderbirds F.16 and C-17 aircraft yesterday during the Subang Airshow.

The Thunderbirds are based at the Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas and regularly tour the world and the United States itself. The show started at 10.30am and was held at the Royal Malaysian Air Force Subang Air Base in Shah Alam. Admission was free to the public.

Michael Jackson This Is It


Yep! This is it! A must-see for Michael Jackson fans.

The movie is based on more than 100 hours of footage from rehearsals for the 50 London shows he had planned to do. Jackson died in June aged 50 from high levels of drugs in his body including the powerful anaesthetic propofol, more commonly used on hospital patients before surgery..

Floating Prayer Mat in Permatang Pauh, Penang

Yesterday, the Star reported about a floating prayer mat.

Magic act: Residents looking curiously at the floating prayer mat shaped like a woman performing prayers at Mohamad Shuhaimi's house in Permatang Pauh, Penang.


This is the second time this sort of incident has been reported. The first time was several months ago in another part of the country.

Once in a while, we get an email in the mailbox imploring us to not open a certain email from a certain hacker or with a specific subject matter. Oh yes, some of these are real, alright. My office system has been hit a few times. I tell you, even a company in the Forbes 500 can fall victim to that! Now you know!

Not sure if this one is a joke but it's better to be safe than sorry. Just read the email below and thought I'd pass it along. You could too if you wish..

What Do We Do During an Earthquake?


I was looking up on something in my archives and stumbled on a post about an earhtquake hitting Padang, Sumatra, early March 2007. It was recorded as a 6.3-magnitude quake. During that time, KL was also affected in terms of building shakes and such.

Looks like with us sitting on or near the Pacific Ring of Fire, we'd be subjected to periodical quakes and shakes.

Many of us who have not experienced an earthquake wouldn't have a clue as to what to do in the event of an earthquake. What should we do when we are indoors, outdoors, in a moving vehicle or trapped under debris? Here is some expert advice on What to Do During an Earthquake from the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).


What to Do During an Earthquake

Stay as safe as possible during an earthquake. Be aware that some earthquakes are actually foreshocks and a larger earthquake might occur. Minimize your movements to a few steps to a nearby safe place and stay indoors until the shaking has stopped and you are sure exiting is safe.
If indoors

* DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON on until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.

* Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.

* Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.

* Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, loadbearing doorway.

* Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.

* Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.

* DO NOT use the elevators.


If outdoors
* Stay there.

* Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.

* Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings, at exits, and alongside exterior walls. Many of the 120 fatalities from the 1933 Long Beach earthquake occurred when people ran outside of buildings only to be killed by falling debris from collapsing walls. Ground movement during an earthquake is seldom the direct cause of death or injury. Most earthquake-related casualties result from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling objects.


If in a moving vehicle
* Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.

* Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake.


If trapped under debris
* Do not light a match.

* Do not move about or kick up dust.

* Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.

* Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.

Sand Artist, Kseniya Simonova, Winner of "2009 Ukraine's Got Talent"

Once in a while, if I need a dose of real-life fairy tale, I'd google and watch videos on Paul Potts and Susan Boyle all over again.

If you recall, Paul Potts (who sings opera) won Britain's Got Talent one year while Susan Boyle stunned everyone with her amazing singing and almost won Britain's Got Talent last year. Both of their videos garnered millions of visits.

The same traffic is seen this time on Kseniya Simonova's video - more than 2.9 million and counting. Ms Simonova, 24, is a sand artist and moved audiences to tears on the way to winning the 2009 Ukraine's Got Talent competition. Here's the video.



Miss Simonova's talent performance (for lack of a better term) was on sand art or more appropriately, sand animation. She draws a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II. The image is projected onto a large screen.

Her artistry begins with her creating a scene of a couple sitting on a bench holding hands under a starry sky, but warplanes spoiled the happy scene.

It is then replaced by a woman’s crying face. A baby arrives and the woman smiles again. Once again war returns and Miss Simonova portrays this by throwing sand chaotically from which a young woman’s face appears. She quickly becomes an old widow, her face wrinkled and sad, before the image turns into a monument to an Unknown Soldier.

This outdoor scene becomes framed by a window as if the viewer is looking out on the monument from within a house.

In the final scene, a mother and child appear inside and a man standing outside, with his hands pressed against the glass, as if saying goodbye.

The Great Patriotic War, as it is called in Ukraine, resulted in one in four of the population being killed with eight to 11 million deaths out of a population of 42 million.
