Friday Frolicking again

It's Friday again. Nice! I've always loved Friday, and why not, I'm a Friday's child.

Actually what I have in mind for today's post is... a quiz. Let's do one today after all the last quiz we did on Friday Frolics is way back in March. Friday Frolics - The Parrot Test & Kuala Lumpur Bird Park

Besides Kuala Lumpur's iconic Petronas Twin Towers, one other place I would highly recommend on your visit to Kuala Lumpur is the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. Believe me, you won't be disappointed.

The Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is a 20.9-acre (8.5 ha) public aviary right in the heart of the city. Located adjacent to the Lake Gardens, the Bird Park houses more than 3000 birds representing more than 200 species in an enclosed aviary. It is one of the world's largest covered bird parks. On my visit I was pleasantly surprised that it's shady inside, so no need for an umbrella, unless if it rains, of course.

For as little as RM2, I think it was, you could feed these pretty birds (parakeets, I think) and they would even gladly perch on your shoulder or your hand for a 'say cheese' photo-moment.

You can get to the Bird Park by bus or by train..(Wikipedia)

- Take the Intrakota Bus 21C, 48C (From Kota Raya).
- Take the Intrakota Bus 18, 21A (From Chow Kit).
- Take the RapidKL Bus 115 (From KL Sentral).
- KTM Komuter - disembark at the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, then walk to the park or take a taxi.

By the way, while you are there, at the Bird Park, do visit the Orchid Garden. When the flowers are in full bloom they are a sight to behold. Orchids in pots are also available for sale. The Orchid Garden is just opposite the Bird Park so don't miss it. Entrance is free.

For an extra bonus, there's also the Hibiscus Garden inside the Orchid Garden. The last time I was there they had Segways for rent so you could tour the garden without too much walking if you are game enough to take on that machine.

There was a mini chain-store that I went to the other day and had a great time filling the shopping basket with stuff that satisfied the 'want' urge as opposed to the 'need' criteria when it comes to shopping. You get the drift. Hey, they were value for money, I thought. The chain was closing down so everything was on half-price. That explains?

Today is the 12th day of the new lunar year and yes, today is still part of the Spring Festival as celebrated by the Chinese community all over the world.

Spring Festival is celebrated for 15 days, from Day 1 which was on February 8 until the 15th day which will fall on Monday, February 22.

For this Friday Frolics, I have picked one relating to Shoes. Let me tell you something with reference to shoes this time of the year.

Buying shoes during Chinese New Year (any of the 15 days) is a no-no. The Chinese observe some do's and don'ts during this time of the year and buying shoes is one of the don'ts. Some still observe this, yours truly included. It is believed that buying shoes this time of the year will result in a coming year of sighs and challenges. I figured better to be safe than sorry.

The real human migration here in Malaysia would probably begin tomorrow (Saturday) as people will start making the journey back to their hometown in anticipation of the long 4-day weekend ahead.

This holiday is the Chinese New Year which begins on Monday, February 8. This is a 2-day gazetted holiday so all schools, government departments and offices will be closed. But don't worry if you are here on a holiday because shopping malls and shopping complexes are all open, so are restaurants. While you are here, do enjoy the decorations and the air of festivity.

Friday Frolics - Find the Hidden Panda

It is another hot day here in Kuala Lumpur. The weatherman at Google recorded a temperature of 30deg C or 86deg F as at 10 this morning. See, no bluffing, one!

But then again, the weather is usually like this - so hot, and dry, and windy - during this time of the year, i.e, around Chinese New Year, which if you are counting is just nine days away. Hurray!

If you find the heat quite unbearable, do like what many people do, go out to the mall - where the aircon is good and the shopping even gooder (read better). The heat is too much outside for you to venture out? Ok, never mind, stay in and see if this week's Personality Quiz would cool you down somewhat it being a Winter scene and all.

Friday Frolics - What Planet Are You From?

If you are someone who finds joy in looking at the sky, you are in for a rare celestial treat.

Malaysians, as well as with most parts of the world, are in for this treat as the five planets of Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Venus and Mercury align in a rare astronomical event from last night until the end of February.


This rare alignment will be visible simultaneously before dawn during this period. The best display of this phenomenon is expected to be on Jan 27 when the Moon comes into alignment with the five and Jupiter and Venus will shine the brightest.

A senior lecturer at the National University of Singapore’s Department of Physics, Dr Cindy Ng told TODAY that four planets, with the exception of Mercury, had already been visible for several days.

Mercury, she said, has just become visible, having moved far enough from the Sun.

“Usually, we see the five planets in the night sky at different times of the night. It is thus a special event to observe all five planets in the night sky at one time,” she was quoted as saying.

Those who wish to see this rare event can begin their watch just after 8pm tonight (12.50pm GMT).
