Goodbye August, Hello September!

STREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETCH..... Yawwwwwnnn!! Is it September already?

September... lots happening in September. For starters, let's crank it up with a song, shall we? None more befitting than September by Earth, Wind and Fire. Can't believe this number is three decades old.

Let's look at what's in store for September:

Sept 1 - Labor Day in the US (this year). Over here, the fasting month of Ramadhan begins for Muslims. Selamat Berpuasa.

- In India, Teachers' Day is celebrated on September 5. The date is the birthday of the second President of India, academic philosopher Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

- In Japan, Respect for the Aged Day is a national holiday celebrated on the third Monday of September. Autumnal Equinox Day is also a national holiday.

- In the United States, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15.

- In Mexico, Independence Day is celebrated September 15.

- In Saint Kitts and Nevis, National Heroes' Day is celebrated September 16.

- National Grandparents' Day takes place on the first Sunday after Labor Day in the United States and Canada.

- In the United States, September 11 is Patriot Day, in remembrance of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

- The equinox named the autumnal equinox in the northern hemisphere and the vernal or spring equinox in the southern hemisphere occurs on dates varying from 21 September to 24 September.

- In Australia and New Zealand, Father's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September.

And we do have a number of Swans, I mean birthdays coming up in September, don't we?

Happy Birthday, my dear friends, and may sunshine and blue skies fill your days!

September spells the end of yet another fabulous summer vacation for tourists but no sad goodbyes. They are probably raring to go back to their real routine. Eh?

Adios amigos and have a pleasant flight back.

Wait a minute, that's not a celebration is it? :(

  5. Dulcie Evonne September (August 20, 1935–March 29, 1988) was a South African anti-apartheid political activist who was assassinated in Paris.

Dulcie represented the African National Congress and was assassinated while opening up the ANC offices in Paris between 9.45am and 10.00am. Five shots from a .22-calibre gun with a silencer attached struck her in the head. It is still not known who the assassin was, but among the suspected are Joseph Klue (SADF Sergeant Major), Dirk K. Stoffberg (arms dealer and SA agent) and Heine Hüman who has claimed to be involved in the killing. Whoever he was, it is suggested that he was hired to kill Dulcie by the South African government. In recent years her death has been attributed to the Civil Co-operation Bureau.

Before her assassination, Dulcie had been investigating trafficking of weapons between France and South Africa. Supposedly, this trafficking included nuclear materials[citation needed].

On the day after her murder, Alfred Nzo commented about Dulcie, "If ever there was a soft target, Dulcie September was one."

Jean Michel Jarre composed a song for his 1988 Revolutions album named "September" and was dedicated to Dulcie. The song featured Mireille Pombo and a female choir from Mali and was performed at his Destination Docklands concert at London's Royal Victoria Dock in 1988.

  6. If we take 16th Sept 1963 as the day Malaysia achieved independence (and rightly so), we would be celebrating this month instead of last month.

  8. Mockingbird, that is so sad. The world is such a cruel place sometimes. It brings to mind Vincent about Van Gogh by Don McLean:

"The world was never meant for one as beautiful as you." - Starry, Starry Night

Thank you so much for the insightful information about Dulcie September.

  9. Foong, personally, I'd still prefer Aug 31 as it is easier to remember and besides we have been using this date from day one. Why rock the boat? A shift in date is not such a big deal, IMO. So far, response to the change has not been viewed positively. There are worse things. No?
