Friday Frolics - What's Your Medieval Profession?

I don't know about other cultures, but in the Chinese culture there are some gifted-spiritually persons who are able to tell one's so-called 'three lifetimes', i.e. this life, the one preceding and the life after this life'.

My mom checked out mine and she told me what I was or specifically something I did in my previous life and what my next life would be. It's hard to say whether I believe it or not but it's still nice to be hopeful about what's to come. Oh well...

This week's quiz has something to do with Your Profession in Medieval Times. Remember, this is just a quiz, so just take it with a pinch of salt whatever your profession was back in the old days.

In three days' time, Malaysia will be celebrating her 58th National Day. This year, the celebration will be held in Kuala Lumpur at Dataran Merdeka or Merdeka Square right in the heart of the city.

And tomorrow people will be taking to the streets to join the Bersih 4 rally. This is slated to be a 34-hour protest rally. You can view updates here on #Bersihrally and #Bersih4, and here for live feed.

This time, the participants for BERSIH 4.0 are gathering to make a stand for 6 things: fair and just elections, the freedom of speech, the financial scandals of the Malaysian PM, the fall of the ringgit, the burden of the rakyat for the country’s debts, and to object GST. (MSN)

If you are going downtown the next three days, be forewarned that it could be a nightmare to navigate through the streets of KL due to the many road closures.

Sorry, I digress.. back to Friday Frolics quiz..

A little tour of Kuala Lumpur

If you have yet to visit our beloved city, Kuala Lumpur, let me take the opportunity to show you around parts of the city via a few short videos taken by The Star during yesterday's Rally KL112.

From the video below and a few other related videos, you will get to see Stadium Merdeka, once the stadium used for national football matches before Bukit Jalil National Stadium came along. You will see a stadium filled with enthusiastic and peaceful rally supporters at Saturday's KL112 Rally for Clean and Free elections.

You will also see Central Market, a tourist destination for arts and crafts shopping in Kuala Lumpur.

One of the 27 conditions agreed upon was to have only 30,000 people inside the stadium but according to the authorities, the number exceeded that. Apparently, someone was counting?

Peaceful gathering as promised and other related videos..
Hope you will enjoy the little tour of Kuala Lumpur. More videos and sights of Kuala Lumpur and the Rally..

If you don't fancy crowds or being caught in a traffic congestion (of both vehicular and human kind), KL city is where you would want to avoid today, Saturday. Why?

Today is the day of yet another people's rally from 2 to 5pm to be held at Merdeka Stadium. Police approval has been granted for a peaceful rally and they (the police) are making good on their promise of ensuring a peaceful Himpunan Kebangkitan Rakyat rally by not deploying the Federal Reserved Unit (FRU) personnel or conducting roadblocks and road closures in the city.

The organisers of Himpunan Kebangkitan Rakyat have pledged to ensure that their rally at Stadium Merdeka will be a peaceful one.

A notice outside Stadium Merdeka stating that the rally had been given the police go-ahead and City police chief DCP Datuk Mohmad Salleh has asked everyone to help ensure a zero-casualty gathering. The Star

Eight routes have been planned for rally supporters to meet at - Amcorp Mall in Petaling Jaya; Masjid Arrahman in UM; Brickfields; KLCC; Kelab Sultan Sulaiman; Pasar Seni; Jalan Sultan and Masjid Negara - and from these meeting points, supporters will march on to Stadium Merdeka just like marching on to watch a football game at the stadium. Stadium Merdeka is right in the middle of the city in the vicinity of Chinatown. A map below for your reference.

Rally organisers target a turnout of one million people at the rally which is expected to be coloured by the BERSIH's signature yellow, the anti-Lynas' flourescent green, the Pakatan Rakyat women's purple and so forth.

Inspector-General of Police Secretariat (Corporate Communications) Asst Comm Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said the organisers had agreed to the 27 conditions stipulated which was signed by PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu.

However, should you decide to be there, for your own safety, you may want to take note of the do's and dont's for this KL112 rally or for future rallies for that matter. I hope you read Bahasa Malaysia because the list is in BM. If you have been to previous rallies, the list could serve as a reminder to be adequately equipped.

428 Bersih 3.0 Live updates

Warning: This is a long post.

If you were wondering as to why there was no update here on the Bersih 3.0 rally yesterday, I was out of town. You may even say I missed the action. I expected a peaceful sit-in rally but it was not to be from what I read.

If you are familiar with Kuala Lumpur (with reference to streets and building landmarks) and may be interested in the situation building up to the event, here's the chronology of events borrowed from The Star:

Dataran Merdeka was declared out of bounds to the public for 72 hours, from Friday morning, ahead of the planned Bersih 3.0 rally Saturday afternoon. A magistrate's court order was issued Thursday night. The court order was being displayed on an electronic billboard at Dataran Merdeka.

Other areas covered under the court order include Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, Jalan Raja and Jalan Kelab.

The court order bars organisers of Bersih 3.0 and people from gathering at the historic square. The organisers say they will abide by the court order but insist the gathering will go on as planned.

Bersih co-chairman Ambiga had said on Friday that they would respect the court order and remain outside Dataran.

Himpunan Hijau, an anti-Lynas group, has also stated its intention to hold a rally, protesting the setting up of a rare earth processing plant in Gebeng, Pahang.

Below was the chronology of live updates of the Bersih 3.0 rally at Dataran Merdeka yesterday. Credit goes to The Star:

7.50am: Very heavy police presence at the entrance of KLCC, Jalan Ampang. No sign of any demonstrators.

8.30am: Police have blocked entry into the city via Jln Syed Putra; both from Federal Highway and Jalan Klang Lama. Jam building up on Federal Highway.

KL Sentral bustling with people going about with their daily activities, unperturbed with the expected gathering of Bersih 3.0 supporters at nearby Jalan Brickfields. The large crowd can be attributed to the fact that it is a long weekend with Tuesday being Workers Day. Many were seen carrying bags to make their way back to their hometowns or holiday destinations. No Bersih supporters have gathered at Jalan Brickfields.

Calm atmosphere at Central Market, with pockets of supporters wearing yellow T-shirts all around the area. Police presence not heavy with only a group of Rela members and several police officers around. No police trucks in the area.

8.51am: Traffic has started to build up on some roads leading towards the city centre, where Dataran Merdeka is. The Federal Highway has been congested from the Mid Valley intersection up to the Putra University station from 8am as motorists encounter road blocks, which were set up around the Dataran Merdeka at midnight. Other major roads in the city relatively clear.

Dataran Merdeka is off-limits but hats are not..

Hats are not popular here in Malaysia when they ought to be in this tropical climate. The weather the past few days has been hot and dry and humid at the same time. The strange thing about our weather is, when it rains it pours and when it's dry, it can get really, really hot.

By the way, if you intend to be at the Bersih 3.0 rally tommorow, it would be wise to bring along a hat or an umbrella or both - to protect yourself from the sun, to fan yourself with, or to shield yourself from any shower, if you get what I mean.

Doesn't this look like the giant tv at Dataran Merdeka, and with a message too that says the square is offlimits.

Bersih 3.0 Venue & Dataran Merdeka

This is Dataran Merdeka, quiet and deserted after KL Mayor, Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail, declated Dataran Merdeka and all roads leading to it would be closed from 6am Friday to 6am on Sunday.

Meanwhile the Magistrates court has issued an order preventing the organisers of Bersih 3.0 and members of the public from entering Dataran Merdeka on Saturday. The order was made at 8:30pm Thursday by Magistrate Zaki Asyraf Zubir following an application by the police.

The court order bars organisers and members of the public from gathering at Dataran from midnight Friday until May 1.

From what I read, the venue for Bersih 3.0 is Dataran Merdeka. There will also be a Bersih rally in Ipoh, at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Recreational Park, popularly known as the Polo Ground. The Bersih movement is for free and fair elections in the country.

City life goes back to normal in Kuala Lumpur

What prompted this post is an email I received this morning and I thank the sender for her concern.

Interestingly, people outside of Kuala Lumpur still think it is chaotic here after the rally. Let me assure you that the situation is nothing like that. Life is back to normal as what we know it, like the rally on Saturday never happened. Come on, people! KL folks are more intelligent and more mature than that! We do what we think is right. We join the rally - I join in spirit. Mission accomplished. We disperse and go home to our loved ones. We go back to work the following Monday. Life goes on..

Here's proof that KL life is back to normal. This was taken in Chinatown, what looks like Petaling Street, near where the rally took place on Saturday. Life is back to normal.

KL KTM Station, Central Market, Pudu, Petaling Street and Bukit Bintang where protesters and police were locked in a stand-off were abuzz with locals and tourists.

But police maintained a small presence near Merdeka Stadium and Dataran Merdeka. All's well in Kuala Lumpur..

Situation in Kuala Lumpur - Back to normal

For you who have a need or will be coming to Kuala Lumpur today, tomorrow, next weekend, next month or planning a trip here or wondering how the poor folks are doing in Kuala Lumpur, I am happy to report that our lovely city of Kuala Lumpur is back to normal. The sun is shining again, so to speak.

Roadblocks mounted by the police were lifted by 7pm yesterday and traffic began streaming back into the city though law enforcement officers were stationed at strategic locations to maintain peace and order.

The situation in KL is back to normal as we know it.

Objectives were met as what The Star reported:

EVERYBODY seems to have achieved what they wanted over yesterday's Bersih 2.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur.

The demonstrators had no access to any particular venue, so they gathered anyway en route.

And so they declared the rally a success.

The police had also imposed a 22-hour lockdown of the city.

They, too, declared the day a success.

The Federal Government had observed the minimal participation of the public and declared yesterday a success too.

There seems to be no rancour or bitter recriminations.

Since everybody appears to have got what they wanted, perhaps the country as a whole can now move on.

Looks like a fun outing for some, waving yellow flowers and all. When was the last time you sang the national anthem?

Street rallies though their intentions may be honorable are a tricky thing. Routines are affected even in the littlest ways. A family friend who has a roaring motorbike business in Chinatown has had to shutter his shop to stay safe. He would have lost some business during the rally. Elsewhere including Bukit Bintang and Pudu, shops were closed. Also, hundreds were stranded when roller shutters started coming down in KL Sentral. Also seen stuck in the crowd were travellers who arrived from KLIA via the KLIA Express while a few tourists were seen taking pictures at Dataran Merdeka before the rally began and under the watchful eyes of FRU who were already on standby.

Certainly one for the album..

Let's take a look at a couple of videos and locations around the city. This one shows the start of the rally..

This one the KTM train station..

This is a shot of the standoff at Pudu near Puduraya. The crowd was not able to get through the police barricade on their way to Stadium Merdeka.

Here's a map of where the rallies took place. The heavy downpour did not dampen spirits.

The rally was scheduled for 2pm and to end at 4pm. Shortly before 4pm, the police issued a warning for the group to disperse.

Bersih steering committee member Haris Ibrahim then asked the crowd to disperse as he said Bersih 2.0 had achieved its objective of gathering at the stadium.

Elsewhere, pro-Bersih rallies were also held in Melbourne and London. A number of Malaysians in Melbourne held a peaceful rally there to show support for Bersih 2.0. They wore yellow T-shirts, held up banners and placards before reciting the Rukun Negara and chanting “Daulat Tuanku”.

In London, a “solidarity walk” took place.

In KL, a total of 1,667 people were arrested for taking part in various rallies in the city, said Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar. Those arrested, including 151 women and 16 children, were taken to Pulapol, the police training centre located in Jalan Semarak where they were provided with food and given medical treatment. Anwar Ibrahim was hurt at KL Sentral. He sustained injuries to his head and knees and underwent a CT scan as he felt nausea and dizziness.

Besides Bersih 2.0 chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, those picked up included PKR's Gombak MP Azmin Ali, Subang MP R. Sivarasa and Batu MP Tian Chua, and PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, his deputy Mohamad Sabu and vice-presidents Mahfuz Omar and Salahuddin Ayub.

By 11pm, all those detained were released.

The situation in KL is back to normal.

Welcome to Kuala Lumpur!

Current situation in Kuala Lumpur

View realtime updates on Bersih 4 - 29 and 30 August, 2015.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hush! You could hear a pin drop in Kuala Lumpur..this morning.

Political rallies have such an effect on a city, any city. Kuala Lumpur is no different. Here in the city, almost everything (traffic, business particularly) has come to a standstill, somewhat. The following pictures give an idea of the current situation in Kuala Lumpur today.

On a positive note, these pictures are good in a way they show us parts of the city like a tour sort of and no traffic distraction to mar the view. Enjoy the pictures or rather enjoy Kuala Lumpur in all her quietness. Pictures courtesy of The Star taken this morning, Sat, Jul 9.

Crowd outside the Masjid Jamek LRT station, one of the busiest stations in KL

Very quiet outside of Istana Negara at 10.20am this morning. Istana Negara is the palace of the King, a tourist site. The palace is not shown on the picture but it's on the left.

Medan Pasar deserted as at 10.30am. Notice the pre-war shop-buildings on the right. KL started her days from the old tin-mining era and till today, the city has many buildings from that era, maintained and restored for their cultural and historical value. Shops close on Sundays here but the place is teeming with activity with foreign workers out in the city on their day-off.

Police being briefed at Stadium Merdeka this morning. This is the stadium where the Bersih rally is to be held at 2pm this afternoon. A little history here from Wikipedia: It was the site of one of Malaysia's most historically significant events. On 31 August 1957, power was transferred from the British Empire to the newly independent Malayan government. Tens of thousands of people crowded into the stadium, which was built specifically for this occasion.

Police guarding the entrance to Stadium Merdeka.

Barbed wire outside Stadium Merdeka. This is the stadium where the Bersih group will assemble at 2.00pm this afternoon.

Roadblock at Jalan Maharajalela. The building on the right is Chinese Assembly Hall. This is in a busy part of the city.

Police on standby at the National Mosque. The mosque is in the background.

Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman almost empty. This is really unusual because this part of the city is never without traffic, both auto and human. The road ahead leads to the city center. The Tune Hotel is within walking distance from here, on the right.

Police personnel at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. This part of the city has mostly old buildings lining the street.

Chow Kit market is almost empty this morning. Chow Kit is a sub-district in central Kuala Lumpur. Its market is the largest wet market and a tourist attraction in Kuala Lumpur. Notice how deserted and devoid of human presence the place is. Business loss in KL is expected to run into millions today.
