MAS' Local Fares Go Up

Domestic air-travel is going to cost more with the announcement that MAS will further increase its domestic fares. The Star has the following feature article on its front-page today.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines will increase its domestic fares by an average of 15% for economy class and 25% for business class in two weeks – the first increase for local routes in 14 years.

But from today – the day when the domestic route is rationalised with AirAsia coming in as a major local airline – MAS is increasing its fuel surcharges and imposing a RM14 administration fee for each ticket issued.

Though a small consolation, coach travel to the International Airport sees a saving here with the introduction of the coach service from KL Sentral.

And with reference to an earlier post on the proposed bullet train linking Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, I came across this interesting letter in The Star the other day. The writer seems to have knowledge of the various train services in other countries and shares his knowledge on the associated issues pertaining to the setting up of the train service.

  1. As world oil production peaks and starts to decline as it is now, at the same time, developing countries - particularly China and India - need more and more energy. The result will be higher prices for everything that uses fossil fuels - transport, agriculture, etc.

The way out of this mess is to reverse globalization and move toward much more local, sustainable communities.

It won't be an easy road ahead, but we may be able to actually improve our way of life.

  2. Japanese gasoline prices went up 10 yen per liter this week to JPY 140 per liter. That's about US $4.70 per gallon.

    Good thing I don't drive.

  3. Yet another reason to fly on AirAsia ...

Fuel surcharge we understand but additional adminstration fee for each ticket issued?? Go figure out MAS! *sigh*

  4. Pandabonium, reversing globalization sounds like a mammoth task. Every nation has to work in tandem to see it materialise. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi there, sweet Momo, how are you? Prices seem to go up and never down, do they? For you, a ride in a bicycle basket would be just as fun, wouldn't it?

FH2o, some things we will never understand. **sigh**

  5. I'm good, thanks. I have my summer hair cut to keep cool, and get two walks a day - though earlier and later in the day when it is cool. All this rushing around in cars seems foolish to me. People could do the same things closer to home that they do further away.

Besides, you can't smell the important neighborhood "messages" we dogs leave for each other if you ride in a car.

  6. Oh, you WonderDog Momo, you make me smile. A summer haircut? You must be looking really neat and pretty right now. Yeah, all this rushing around can be foolish but that's what people do best. **Hugs**

  10. RS, it's just a matter of time before AA's fares would also increase though they may not be as high as MAS's as AA is an LCC (Low Cost Carrier).
