Paying with one-sen coins is okay – up to RM2

Most of us have a container at home that collects all the one sen coins. At least, I do and it is filling up fast. The times I could use these one sen coins are at fastfood joints and sometimes for utilities bills which would still take more visits and payments to deplete the stock.

In Malaysia, even though we know that all coins are legal tender, how many of us really know how much of the one sen coins can we use per transaction?

According to Section 24 of the Central Bank of Malaysia Act, you can use one sen, five sen, 10 sen and 20 sen coins to pay for a transaction of up to RM2 while for 50 sen coins, you can pay for a product or service worth up to RM10.

  1. Though you can use one-sen coins up to $2, the receiver will be somewhat annoyed having to count them...200 pieces! Better to drop them in a donation box?

  2. Joe, absolutely, that's why I normally drop the change in the coin-box provided. Besides, I can't imagine the shopkeeper giving me 200 pieces in change! It's gotta work bothways, right?
