Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease that affects the brain and spinal chord, i.e., the central nervous system. MS results when the fatty myelin sheaths around the axons of the brain and spinal cord are damaged, leading to demyelination and scarring that causes a broad spectrum of symptoms. Disease onset usually occurs in young adults and is more common in females. The cause remains unknown though theories include genetics or infections. Todate, there is no known cure. Treatments attempt to return function after an attack, prevent new attacks, and prevent disability. Life expectancy of patients is nearly the same as that of the unaffected population.
Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms include loss of sensitivity or tingling, pricking or numbness, muscle weakness, fatigue, difficulties with coordination and balance, difficulties with speech and swallowing, depression, pain and others. MS patients are advised to keep their fitness level up by exercising daily. Aerobics, tai chi, easy weight lifting, swimming, jogging and cycling are some of the exercise that are recommended.
