Maldives - All-glass Undersea Restaurant

Alright, here's the answer to "What's this?". MM got it right though I love all the other answers too.

LB suggested underwater observation deck? and Waste disposal unit?
KS said Jungle restaurant?

To be exact, this is the World's First All-glass Undersea Restaurant and it's in Maldives.

Opened on April 15, this is the first ever all-glass undersea restaurant in the world and it is at the Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa. So those of you visiting Maldives, don't forget to visit this place.

Named Ithaa, it sits five meters below the waves of the Indian Ocean, surrounded by a vibrant coral reef encased in clear acrylic offering diners 270-degress of panoramic underwater views.

Diners will come face-to-face with the stunning underwater environment and be blowen away by the color, clarity and beauty of the underwater world in the Maldives. Enjoy the fine cuisine and take time to enjoy the views - without ever getting your feet wet.

Created by MJ Murphy Ltd, a design consultancy based in New Zealand, Ithaa's distinctive feature is the use of curved transparent acrylic walls and roof, similar to those used in aquarium attractions. The fact that the entire restaurant except for the floor is made of clear acrylic makes this unique in the world. A coral garden on the reef is being planted to add to the spectacular views of the rays, sharks and many colourful fish that live around the area.

  2. Exactly my thoughts when I first laid eyes on it. Don't think I wanna eat there. Sure don't wanna be on the stingrays' wanted list.

  4. "Ooh, Henry, look at that big school of fish!"
    "Yes, dear."
    "They're all swimming so fast!"
    "Yes, dear."
"Whoo! That was a shark! Did you see that?"
    "Yes, dear."
"It went by like...like an arrow or something! Goodness me! You know what, I think it was chasing that school of fish!"
    "That's nice, dear."
"Oh, my, Henry! Were those moray eels? My, oh my! Why is everything in such a hurry today?"
    "I don't know, dear."
"Maybe they're having a great big fishy olympics, or something like that! You think, Henry?"
    "Yes, dear."
"Oh, no, wait! Hey, Henry, would you look at that! Maybe that's what they're running from! It looks like there's a big storm coming!"
    "Yes, dear."
"And right here under the ocean, too! Huh! But why would there be a storm under the ocean, Henry?"
    "I don't know, dear!"
"Wow! Would you look at that! You know...is it just me, or does that storm have a great, big eyeball?"
    "That's the kraken, de-ARRRGGGHHH!!!!! "

  6. MM, you're funny. Either a kraken or Nessie.

PandaB, I think I'd avoid that place too. It's too claustrophobic, and fishy. Even the crockery reminds you of a stingray. Arrgghh.... can't breathe!
