Dumpling Day - A Chinese festival

Today is Dumpling Day or Duanwu Festival, one of the major festivals that has been celebrated for thousands of years as part of Chinese culture.

The festival occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar on which the Chinese calendar is based. Today is the day for 2011. The focus of the celebrations includes eating rice dumplings wrapped in lotus leaves though in Malaysia, bamboo leaves are used. In the old days, probably still practised in Hong Kong, racing dragon boats is still part of the tradition. In this part of the world, for those celebrating this festival, the family would gather for a more lavish dinner than usual. For Buddhists, offerings of food would be made to deities and ancestors at the prayer altars.

  1. Happy Dumping ooops Dumpling Day..as I mentioned in STP & Small kucing's blog the Chinese newspaper had a write up about using rafia strings to rope the dumplings which is hazardous to health. So on a lookout when you bought any of them or home made to stay away from the plastic strings but to use natural strings made from banana trunk.
