New Series of Malaysian Banknotes and Coins

The new Malaysian coins are now in circulation. Was elated (I'm simple like that) when I received at a checkout counter a 10-cent new coin yesterday. No surprise actually because I've seen the whole set of the new coins.

In fact, I own a mint set of the new coins as well as a full set of the new notes of the new series of Malaysian banknotes.

According to Bank Negara Malaysia, the exercise of issuing new banknotes and coins is undertaken periodically every twelve years. The theme of the design of the new currency series includes features that are distinctively Malaysia. It also has enhanced security elements in line with the latest advancements in technology for currency notes.

The new fourth series design of banknotes feature in the denomination of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20 and RM100. The current design of the RM50 banknote already in circulation since December 2007 to commemorate Malaysia’s 50th Anniversary of Independence will continue to remain in circulation. The new design coins are the third in the series for the denominations of 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen. This new series of banknotes and coins will co-circulate with the existing series until the latter are gradually withdrawn from circulation.

The Star today highlighted problems encountered with the new coins at parking autopay machines. I remember we used to have this problem when the one ringgit coin was introduced.

  4. SK, I received two more 20 sen coins. I like the color - gold.

Yeah, the new coins are thinner but seem heavier.

New notes in a few more months. Their colors are more vibrant than the current ones, I feel.

  5. Hi Nath, a bit sayang to part with them, eh? Deja vu like we had to part with the one ringgit coins? I discovered later on that I still had a lot left. Sigh..

  6. I still got that RM1 coins too. It was part of hubby's wedding gift for me, and I kept it for sentimental reason. ^^

The new coins are a bit confusing now.

  7. What is the flower on the bank notes? Hibiscus? PS: I love the colours of these notes.

  8. New coins are nice got 10 & 50 sen coins but gomen should not have change their sizes. Bananaz have tried on the new 10sen coin but not accepted by the parking machine as the size is slightly smalleer, not sure about 20sen have not seen & used them. Obviously the new 50sen coin is totally out. That means all coins operated vending machines may have a challenge with the new coins.

  10. Oh didn't know you like to collect new coins! LOL! I only collect old ancient feng shui coins that have a square hole in the middle haha!

One problem with the new coins - can't use them in the parking machines!

  14. Bananaz, yeah, the new coins are smaller and slimmer and they seem heavier. Too bad they are no good for the autopay parking machines.

Do you think the intent is to get the economy going by increasing corporate expenditure on replacing the machines?

I so agree about the new word verification feature. Somehow, I couldn't find the feature to disable it since the migration to the new platform on Blogger (only a few days ago). Anyone has any clue?

  15. Foong, oh, those fengshui coins are interesting. You must be having a good collection of them?

Yeah, new coins and parking machines definitely are not the best of friends right now.

So sorry, Foong, I know what you mean. Am finding a way to get rid of WV. Perhaps it's time to migrate to the new template and adopt that comment-threading style of comments. What's holding me back from migrating is the thought of having to retype all the current links. :(

  16. no mention of what the security measures are in the new notes. the video shows a lot about the design features but nothing to tell you fake from real. when the uk £50 came in the emphasis was all about showing its new security features, holographs, metal strip etc etc. to help people spot fakes. the Rm100 will be worth faking and what features has it got to make it difficult to forge? or maybe i am mistaken to be so concerned about forgeries and no one will bother to forge the new malaysian ringgit or dollar coin.

  17. Hello there, Creating my life. True indeed that nothing is shown on the video about detecting counterfeit notes.

Your comment, "and no one will bother to forge the new malaysian ringgit or dollar coin." made me laugh. Oh no! That bad, huh?

However, I did a little searching on the Bank Negara website and found this section on Identifying Counterfeit Banknote - which is helpful.

    Thank you for stopping by.

  18. hi, thanks for that link on how to spot counterfeit notes. when i saw it i thought how come i did not notice that link when i first read the post. it is v interesting the security features.i wonder why not many people when they blog about the new notes bother to talk about the security features. have u noticed the US notes seldom gets an upgrade? i wonder why? it must be the most forged currency in the world. i have not seen a new US note but never heard or read any news that it has ever been upgraded with new security features.

  19. Creating my life, I apologise, I should have indicated that that portion is an Update.

Interesting observation about the US notes. "Most forged currency in the world"? Probably.
