World Diabetes Day

I believe it's World Diabetes Day today so a little extra knowledge about this deadly disease is in order.

DIABETES FACTS WORLDWIDE (Courtesy of The Star)

1. Every year seven million people develop diabetes.

2. Every 10 seconds
- A person dies from diabetes-related causes
- Two people develop diabetes

3. Seven of the 10 countries with the highest number of diabetics are in the developing world.

4. Type 1 diabetes, which mainly affects youths, is rising alarmingly at a rate of 3% per year.

5. In the 1970s, Malaysians only consume 17 teaspoonfuls of sugar per person, but it is up to 24 now.

6. Early this year, the country was ranked the world's eighth highest sugar user.

Startling stats, eh? Time to play our part to reverse the trend and most importantly to take positive steps for the sake of our own health.

  4. Too much focus is spent on cure, and too little is spent on prevention.

My father's side has a history of diabetes, so I gotta be careful with my own diet.

  5. Tekkaus, indeed! Live a healthy life.

Rej, unfortunately it is for life, but it can be controlled with medication and proper diet and exercise.

  6. SK, I know, and that McDonald sundae ice-cream can be a life-saver at times!

Shingo, so true about the wrongly-placed emphasis.

Fortunately, it's not a guaranteed 100% hit. Wise move to be watching your diet.

  7. Very alarming statistics and it's going to be an epidemic in Malaysia in a few years time. But unfortunately, people will find it hard to replace their teh tarik with a glass of plain water!

I went to PappaRich the other day and could not resist ordering the sweet drinks and sweet desserts! Damn! I think must have taken in more than 12 teaspoons of sugar during that meal alone!

  8. Foong, teh tarik is not bad if you remember to tell the mamak to "kurang manis" (reduce the sweetness). But the oily roti canai (pan cake) is no help either, huh? LOL! But once in a while it's ok lah, even plus the desserts at PappaRich. What is life without some small indulgences, eh?
