Italy, the 2006 World Cup Champions

ITALY 1-1 FRANCE a.e.t 5-3 PSO

I'm going around like a zombie today. I'm sure lots of others are too after staying up to witness the greatest show on earth: Italy vs France in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in which saw Italy recovered from the loss of an early goal to outscore France in
a penalty showdown.

For Zinedine Zidane there was double disappointment as his final ever game ended with a red card. I feel sorry for him in a way. Actually, one of the reasons I stayed up is to see him play taking into consideration that it would be his swan song on the world stage. Sad that it should end this way.

"Zidane will remember this night for as long as he lives. France had promised to repeat their success of 1998 for their retiring captain and only he will know what possessed him when he thrust his forehead into the chest of Marco Materazzi. Zidane had to go, accompanied down the tunnel by the glare of thousands and thousands of flash bulbs and the tears of the legions of French supporters."

For some, there is a hint of regret that the World Cup has come to an end while for others it could not have been sooner. For me, I have enjoyed the month-long carnival, sort of, though I did not watch all the games. Still, it was a wonderful experience cheering and celebrating when countries that I supported won their game. I am disappointed though that England did not win. Oh well..

Italy are world champions for the fourth time after beating ten-man France 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Berlin's Olympiastadion on Sunday, 9 July 2006. Read about the match here...FIFAworldcup

  1. It was a good final; Italy deserved to win. I still cannot understand Zidane's behaviour...he must be regretting it now.

You can catch France playing Italy again in about 6 weeks' in Euro Cup if I'm not wrong.

  2. form the term 'football'...i only know that it is play with foot..thats it :p.

hopefully i'll make use of this 4 yrs to dev an interest in it:P

  3. hmmm i din watch the match this early morning. although i like france, i dun expect it to win the world cup. haha

  4. Joe, it's a cause-and-effect thingy - that Italian player must have said something really bad to cause Zizou's reaction. However, no excuse for that behaviour.

France may play Italy but no more Zizou le.

Winn, I can understand. I never used to watch football too.

Red Sponge, no wonder they didn't win. The missed your vote. ;)

  5. good game, just pity that it have to end with PSO

  6. Slurp!, I agree - for the spectators, an anti-climax to an otherwise spectacular game. For the team, to lose a game in the PSO really sucks. Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, it was a good game.

  7. Gucci is the only one in the family that watch world cup..

He barks whenever my neighbour start to curse or shout at the TV..

    Strange Human, Crazy dogs.

  8. Probably Gucci agreed with the neighbour. Have you thought about lending Gucci to your neighbour so that they can shout and bark together?

  9. the problem is Tiffi will join Gucci,

and then Bodhi, Sutra, Para and now even Metta, will join in the chorus..

    But Gucci is definitely Italian.

  10. No wonder Gucci was barking. He was celebrating the Italian victory.

How are the rest of the family doing? Hope they're all doing well. The kitties too.

  11. So disapponted that France did not win. zizou was great; even his headbutt looked graceful

  12. Fullmoon, hi! I stayed up to watch Zizou play actually. I figured after this game, I may not get to see him play again and he is very entertaining to watch. I was told Eric Cantona too but I've not had the chance to watch him play. Those were the days, eh?

    "headbutt looked graceful"
haha! what a sweet thing to say.
