1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die

You have heard about the 1000 places to see before you die, now there is a book on 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die by Tom Moon.

There are lots of albums or rather artistes not listed. Don't get upset because there is no one list that can accommodate all tastes and this list is just Moon's taste and he has his reasons for not including them. Bear in mind too, Moon picked albums not single pieces of music. He explained, "I have issues with the 99-cent download culture. You can't expand your world by cherry-picking. You have to take a ride."

His only yardstick was: Is it pleasurable? Even if on any other level it's not considered great work, is it illuminating or uplifting?" This seems rather shallow but considering that he being a working musician and a career music critic with a 20-year tenure (he recently parted company with the Philadelphia Inquirer) and regular contributor to Rolling Stone, America's National Public Radio, Spin, GQ and Esquire over the years, Moon has more than enough credibility to carry this through.

You can see the full list at the book's website.

Albums from Tom Moon's 1000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die include (clockwise from top left): Bitches Brew by Miles Davis, In the Zone by Britney Spears, Michael Jackson's Thriller, Glen Gould's A State of Wonder, The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Buddy Holly's Collection.

  1. Interesting, though I won't get the book simply because he did not include Mariah Carey, my favouite singer, in the list. Instead he included Britney Spears and Madonna. What kind of list is that? : ) Even Christina Aguilera is way better than Britney and she's not even in the list!

  6. Foong, wow! you are a real Mariah Carey fan. Still, the book could be a collector's item. No?

Tekkaus, you could do one up and pick the 1000 blogs you think are a must-read. Be sure to let us know though.

MBL, I just suggested to Tekkaus too.

I guess we can only conclude that Britney Spears (never mind about the going commando) is on the list because she meets the criteria set by Tom Moon. He picked the albums most deserving based on his yardstick. There is no right or wrong as it is his list according to his criteria.

Tekkaus, two awards? Cool! I'll be there to pick them up but a tag too? hmm... that's a different story. LOL! Thank you, all the same.
