Going Green to Save Planet Earth

Never before has the human race been more concerned about climatic changes than now so much so that nations are getting together trying to formulate action items to reverse the effects or to slow them down. Not sure if the recent Climate Conference in Copenhagen was a success though.

Still, with so much publicity about icebergs in the Arctic Circle and ice caps on mountain peaks melting, etc., one can't help but be aware of the impending doom of this planet we call home.

In some small ways, everyone is trying to chip in. Even movie-makers. I haven't seen the movie, "Avatar", but from what I've read, it's also talking about the environment. The other day, I saw The Day The Earth Stood Still. This story tells of aliens (supposedly of a higher order) coming to Earth with the aim of saving it by destroying humans (as they claim that humans are the ones destroying the planet - no surprise) but before that, they save all animals a la Noah's Ark style. The main man is Keanu Reeves - one of my fav actors. It's on Astro this month. Catch it if you can.

At the mall the other day, I couldn't help noticing a crowd at a shop selling exercise equipment. Taking advantage of the year-end sale and perhaps the year-end bonus too, the shop was doing brisk business with their exercise balls and bells, gadgets and equipment.

A dip station fascinated me being compact yet strong enough for the workout. This one can even fit into the trunk of your car. Cool, eh? Probably good for guys intending to build up those six packs.

I wonder if this is auspicious. We are starting the new year with two full moons in January - a full blue moon and a solar eclipse to boot. In Asia, this can be viewed tonight, Jan 1.


Depending on where you live worldwide, the full moon will fall on either December 31, 2009, or January 1, 2010. The full moon falls on December 31 in the Americas, Europe and Africa and is a Blue Moon, or the second full moon in December.

For New Zealand, Australia and most of Asia the full moon will fall on January 1. For that part of the globe, January of 2010 will have two full moons – and the second full moon in January will be their full moon. In the Americas, it is the first of two full moons to occur in December 2009. The full Blue Moon will occur at 19h13 Universtal Time (GMT).

Tonight’s moon will be out all night long, lighting up the nighttime from dusk till dawn. The big full moon will rise around sunset, climb up highest in the sky around midnight, and will set tomorrow around sunrise. As seen from the northern hemisphere, the moon will follow the lofty path of the June sun across the sky tonight. In the southern hemisphere, the moon will lurk close to the horizon, like the winter sun.

This will be the 13th Full Moon of 2009.
It’s a Blue Full Moon the same night it turns a new decade.
The next Blue Moon NYE will be in 29 years on December 31, 2028.
