Flood in Haadyai

If you were in Haadyai yesterday, you may be one of those wading through floodwaters like in the picture above. Tourists and residents were trapped by floodwaters caused by heavy rains which battered the tourist island of Koh Samui and the southern city hub of Haadyai.

Haadyai brings back memories of the "tiger show" we went to. Strangely, we had to go in by the back-door but after the show, we were ushered out through the front which was actually a bar or a club sort of.

Friday Frolics - What Wizard of Oz Character are you?

Hi! It's Friday again. There are many good things about Fridays. To begin with, it is the last day of the workweek for most and today being Deepavali, it's a public holiday adding another day to the weekend. I see the sun is up and the sky is blue which promises to be an awesome setting for a festival and a weekend.

More good news - people are returning to their homes in Kelantan after the flood waters have receded. Over in Borobudur, the UNESCO World Heritage ancient Buddhist complex of Borobudur has been cleaned of the sulphur ashes from Mount Merapi and visitors can once again go up the temple. My girlfriend would be pleased to know that as her trip is coming up end of this month. But I digress.

MAS' Boeing 737-800 & Where do planes go to die

The Star reported that Malaysia Airlines is set to become the first full-service airline in the world to operate the B737-800 with the new Boeing Sky Interior.

To enhance passenger comfort, the interior design is similar to that installed in the B787 Dreamliner and features the use of mood lighting.

Other improvements include a higher ceiling, larger windows, leather seats, touch-screen inflight entertainment units, individual power supply, bigger stowage bins and USB ports for electronics.

The aeroplane is listed at US$70mil (RM217mil) and can accommodate 16 seats in business class and 144 in economy class.

The plane will make its inaugural flight on Monday to Kota Kinabalu, MAS’ new eastern hub, where it will be based, followed by a commercial flight to Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan.

MAS has ordered 54 more B737-800, in addition to 25 Airbus A330-300 and six A380 that will be delivered in stages to replace its older fleet.

The Monsoon has started

If you are visiting the northern and north-eastern states or Peninsula Malaysia, you may want to take note of severe weather. Flash floods, thunderstorms, rough seas and strong winds of up to 60kph were expected to hit the northern part of the peninsula over the next few days, especially the coastal areas. The monsoon season has started.

The Meteorological Department (MMD) has issued a yellow stage warning, adding that heavy rain and thunderstorms with windy conditions were expected to occur over Kelantan and Terengganu beginning today. A yellow stage warning, the first of three warning levels, denotes a possibility of a monsoonal surge in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Coastal areas of east Johor, Kuching and Sarikei are vulnerable to sea level rise due to strong winds and battering waves. Flash floods are likely to occur in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur over low-lying areas affected by the city’s drainage system.

On Thursday, a mini twister swept through Mata Air, Jejawi, Perlis. Roofs were blown off while signboards were uprooted and houses damaged during the incident. A van was also overturned.
