England, the only country leaving Europe twice in a week!

Couldn't help posting this.

With England leaving Euro six days ago (June 23) and being out of Euro 2016 (football) yesterday, the caption hits the nail on the head, don't you think?

*Sad* on both counts. Oh well..

EU Referendum - Final results are in

Brexit it is. UK votes to leave EU after 43 years in historic referendum.

Leave won by 52% to 48% with England and Wales voting strongly for Brexit, while London, Scotland and Northern Ireland backed staying in the EU.

UPDATE:

Brexit: David Cameron to quit after UK votes to leave EU

Prime Minister David Cameron is to step down by October after the UK voted to leave the European Union.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, he said he would attempt to "steady the ship" over the coming weeks and months but that "fresh leadership" was needed.

The PM had urged the country to vote Remain but was defeated by 52% to 48% despite London, Scotland and Northern Ireland backing staying in.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage hailed it as the UK's "independence day".

The pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985 as the markets reacted to the results.

Other snippets..

'Huge swing for the pound'
Traders have been reacting to that violent move for the pound after the results from Newcastle and Sunderland.

"It was a huge swing for the pound - something we virtually never see. The move was bigger than the pound dropped on Black Wednesday," said Joe Rundle, head of trading at ETX Capital.

"Nervousness is palpable in the markets as there is the potential that assets have been wildly mispriced. Investors were a little too complacent and if we do see a vote out we will see moves well beyond this," he added.

Pound is being 'killed' on the markets
"These moves are concerning and bring back pretty painful memories of 2008," said Jeremy Cook, chief economist at World First.

Pretty good illustration of the results so far. A tweet in reference to the final result:

'projection for the final result looks something like this.' Clever.

Rain stops voting
BBC South's political correspondent Peter Henley tweets that some commuters say problems on Southern Trains stopped them getting home in time to vote.

Torrential rain caused disruption on the railways in the South East, with travellers from Waterloo and on the London to Brighton line affected.

Anxious wait at campaign HQs...
With a long night ahead, a photographer at Remain HQ rests his feet while he awaits news

Even Lindsay Lohan is watching..

An unlikely referendum-watcher?

The American actress Lindsay Lohan appears to be taking a keen interest in the referendum results from across the pond.

So far she has thanked us for our primers on UK geography and has warned of the effects on small businesses.

Campaign literature: A challenge for librarians
Now that so much campaign literature and political debate is produced and takes place online, libraries face different challenges in capturing and archiving it.

Curator Daniel Payne explains how the LSE Library is collecting ephemera relating to the referendum.

Brexit Tories urge Cameron to remain PM
Eighty four Conservative MPs who campaigned for the UK to leave the EU have written to David Cameron urging him to remain PM, whatever the result.

Referendum result - who's watching?

Google is tracking global interest in the referendum, with a map showing where it is being searched - the darker the colour, the more search interest. Predictably, there's strongest interest in the UK and Europe, but also in other parts of the English speaking world, including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Counting begins in Gibraltar

Ballot boxes are on their way for counting at the university in Gibraltar. About 23,000 UK citizens in the British overseas territory were eligible to vote.

Vote counters at the ready
With voting closed, counting can begin. In Swansea, 150 counters are primed and ready for the first ballot boxes to arrive.

Quirky Polling Station
As well as dogs, another traditional feature of polling day are pictures of quirky voting venues. In Croydon, south London, a garage has been turned into a polling station - and, as an added bonus, there are two dogs waiting outside.

Relaxing in Gibraltar...
There's been fine weather in much of the UK today but some areas, including the south east of England, have been deluged with rain.

So spare a thought for the folk of Gibraltar, where many EU referendum voters have been enjoying a sunny afternoon after a trip to the polling station.

On the buses - Some voters in Kingston-upon-Hull get to cast their vote on a bus.

Another Polling Station

Voting across Scotland
Voting in the referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union has begun.

Polling places across the country will be open until 22:00, with the final result said to be expected at "breakfast time" on Friday.

The ballot box for the Hebridean island of Gigha - where there are 122 voters - was transported to the island by the Loch Ranza ferry on Tuesday.

This happens every Monday evening at Publika, or head on over to Pisco’s Bar for their free foreign movie screenings on Tuesdays. If it's art you are interested in, head on to the Petronas Art Gallery at Suria KLCC for some Contemporary Art appreciation. Entrance is free.

7). Experience the nightlife in Changkat even when you’re pinching pennies, there are many clubs and bars that do not charge entry fees and offer free drinks for the ladies every day of the week. Visit Sky Bar at Traders Hotel for a fantastic clubbing experience with view of the entire city for free!

8). Visit the Petronas Twin Towers and experience the view from 1,500 meters high on the deck of the skybridge. Entry costs RM85 per person, but the view is well worth the price, especially at night. A Chance to see Saturn in the sky Today

If you are in Malaysia today, you will get the rare chance of seeing planet Saturn either through a telescope, binoculars or even with the unaided eye when it is opposite the sun after sunset on June 3, which is today.

This NASA file image shows the ringed planet Saturn. - AFP/TheStar

The Star reported:

National Space Agency (Angkasa) research officer at the Langkawi National Observatory, Farahana Kamarudin, said that at this time, the ringed planet would be at its closest to Earth.

"If you are viewing it with the unaided eye, it can be seen as a bright star," she told Bernama.

She said the planet would be in the east with the constellation Scorpio.

Farahana said Saturn could be viewed in an open space which is unhindered by clouds or light pollution.

"In fact, if you use the smartphone, you can use the Google Sky or StarMap software to help track the planet," she added.

She said Saturn takes 29.5 years (10,759 days) to complete its orbit around the Sun.

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in the Solar System, after Jupiter. For comparision, below is a composite image roughly comparing the sizes of Saturn and Earth - courtesy of Wikipedia.

To get a better picture of just how small Earth is compared with the rest of outer space, the following photos will help put our planet in perspective.

This humbling photo, taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft in 2013, shows what Earth, indicated by the tiny white arrow, looks like from 898 million miles away.

Saturn has a prominent ring system that consists of nine continuous main rings and three discontinuous arcs and that is composed mostly of ice particles with a smaller amount of rocky debris and dust.

Saturn's rings are a beautiful spectacle of the cosmos, but they look much better on Saturn than on Earth.

Saturn's rings are so large that you can fit six Earths across them. The millions of ice particles that make up these rings are only as large as a few feet across for comparison.

These photos and more can be viewed on MSN.. 11 mind-melting photos will make you realize how shockingly small Earth is
