Home-grown Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia has taken home top honours at the World Travel Awards Asia and Oceania 2019 for the seventh year in a row.

AirAsia emerged ahead of regional counterparts such as Scoot, Jetstar, SpiceJet, Nok Air and Firefly to win Asia's Leading Low-Cost Airline and Asia's Leading Low-Cost Airline Cabin Crew.

AriAsia Malaysia CEO Riad Asmat was at the awards ceremony in Phu Quoc, Vietnam to receive the award.

"It is an honour to receive these awards," he said in a statement Sunday (Oct 13).

"Being recognised by guests and industry colleagues as Asia's best is a testament to our ongoing efforts to develop new and innovative guest-obsessed products and services," he added.

Riad also thanked the award-winning cabin crew "for their hard work and commitment to delivering and providing the best experience for our guests."

World Travel Awards founder Graham E Cooke said AirAsia continues to set the benchmark for low-cost aviation in Asia.

"Its dedication to improving its services remains unrivalled and I am delighted that it has been acknowledged by both the travel trade and the public having been voted 'Asia's Leading Low-Cost Airline 2019' and 'Asia's Leading Low-Cost Airline Cabin Crew 2019'."

According to AirAsia, the World Travel Awards are one of the most prestigious awards programmes in the global and tourism industry.

The World's Best Low Cost Airline is Malaysia's very own Air Asia. They have been the Best for the 9th year in a row. You read it right. This was revealed at the 2017 Skytrax World Airline Awards held at the Le Bourget Airport in Paris, France in June last year, 2017.

When Air Asia has a Mega Sale, at least once or twice a year, I have lost count, one is able to travel with a '0' fare ticket to selected destinations. You only need pay surcharges. Now Everyone Can Fly so says Air Asia.. it's even on their aircraft livery.

Malaysia has seen an increase in air travel for leisure - in and around the country as well as overseas because of the availability of cheap airfares, thanks to Air Asia.

Imagine going to Johore Bharu, Bali, Hua Hin or Xian for as low as RM 29! For perspective, that's roughly USD7.50. Or visit Seoul, Jeju, or Busan for as low as RM 249 (below USD65)! Air Asia wins again - World's Best Low Cost Airline

Air Asia in its first major promotion of the year is giving away up to three million promotional seats starting from March 13 to 19 for travel period from Sept 1, 2017 to June 5, 2018.

Zero fares? You bet as fares will be as low as RM0 to destinations such as Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, Miri, Bangkok, Phuket, Jakarta and many more. The airline is constantly adding new places to connect travellers to new and exciting destinations, their latest being Luang Prabang, Laos; Bhubaneswar, India; and Honolulu, USA.

Today, I choose to blog about the Best Airlines in the World.

Malaysia, with a population of about 30 million people, is just a small young country in the Southeastern corner of the world, i.e. Southeast Asia. Despite that Malaysia has scored some accolades in the world, for example, Malaysia's Air Asia has been voted the World's Best Low-Cost Airline. This has been released by Skytrax, an expert on air travel.

Update on Day 3, Dec 30 - Wreckage found

NST reported that: An Indonesian warship recovered more than 40 bodies from the sea in the search for the AirAsia jet, a navy spokesman told AFP.

Dozens of floating bodies as well as bags and aircraft debris were first spotted by an Air Force Hercules C130 which flew over waters near Pangkalan Bun in Central Kalimantan at around 11:00am this morning. - Jakarta Post

Indonesia resumed at dawn this morning its search for the Indonesia AirAsia plane that went missing yesterday morning in the Java Sea with 162 people onboard.

Air traffic controllers lost contact with Flight QZ8501 around an hour after it left Juanda international airport at Surabaya in east Java at 5.35am local time Sunday.

The Airbus A320-200 was en route to Singapore when it disappeared after the crew requested a change of flight plan due to stormy weather.

According to Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency chief, the plane is likely at the bottom of the sea.

“Based on the coordinates given to us and evaluation that the estimated crash position is in the sea, the hypothesis is the plane is at the bottom of the sea,” Bambang Soelistyo told a press conference.

“That’s the preliminary suspicion and it can develop based on the evaluation of the result of our search,” he said.

According to aviation experts, weather conditions around the Java Sea towards year end are known to be violent but not unmanageable.

Indonesia AirAsia Flight QZ8501 pilot had asked the air traffic control at 7.12am yesterday to deviate its flight path.

The plane, however, disappeared at 7.24am. Departing from Surabaya at 6.35am, it was sup­­posed to have landed in Singapore at 8.30am.

A Met Separt­ment spokesman when contacted confirmed that the Java Sea region had been experiencing thunderstorms and rain from 6am.

Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology senior expert Ahmad Maulan Bardai said com­munication systems on aircraft such as the A320-200 was designed to work in bad weather.

The airline, Indonesia Air Asia, in an updated statement issued late Sunday, said it is cooperating with the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the incident.

For the families in Singapore, an emergency briefing room at Changi International Airport Terminal Two has been set up where AirAsia Indonesia will be providing regular updates.

An Emergency Call Centre has also been established, available for those seeking information about relatives or friends who may have been onboard the flight. The number is +622129270811.

Sir Richard Branson dons a skirt on AirAsia for losing a bet

Virgin chief executive Richard Branson made his debut as a female flight attendant this weekend, donning a stewardess' uniform and serving drinks to passengers after he lost a bet with a fellow airline magnate.

The Virgin Group founder was honoring a bet made with Air Asia's CEO Tony Fernandes over whose team would win the 2010 Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi.

Shaving his legs for the bet but keeping his beard, Branson wore heels, false eyelashes, makeup and red lipstick while serving customers on an Air Asia flight from Perth to Kuala Lumpur.

Air Asia offers 2 million FREE seats from April 2

Free AirAsia flights to several destinations are up for grabs from April 2.

If you are planning a vacation early part of next year to ASEAN countries (the Far East) or domestic locations, you are in luck. Free seats are for destinations including Penang, Alor Setar, Johor Baru, Kota Baru, Terengganu, Vientiane, Phuket, Ho Chi Minh, Bangkok, Chiangmai and Siem Reap. AirAsia is doing it again, this time offering some 200,000 free seats to popular destinations that include Bali, Singapore, Krabi and Hatyai. Local destinations are such as Johor Bharu and Kota Baru are also included. The offer started yesterday, Feb 18, and runs through to Sunday, Feb 24.

Free seats are available for one-way trip which excludes the fuel surcharge and airport tax. Travel period is between March 1 to July 13. So, if you are planning a holiday within this time-frame, the free seat would come in handy.

One Million Free Seats from AirAsia

AirAsia is back again offering One million Free seats for holiday-makers.

The promotion covers flights throughout the AirAsia network, with flight codes AK, FD, QZ and PQ, which travellers can book from today until Jan 20 at www.airasia.com.

Under the promotion, all-in fares start from RM26 one-way to domestic destinations and RM52 one-way to international destinations.

Man caught smoking in an AirAsia aircraft

The Star today reported about an Air Asia passenger who has been arrested at the airport in Sandakan for smoking in the toilet of the aircraft.

The 27-year-old man, who was on the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan on Sunday, was caught smoking in the toilet by a flight attendant about 30 minutes before landing. Apparently, he hasn't been paying attention to the safety demonstration onboard.

The man was handed over to airport policemen shortly after the flight landed at 10am. According to the police, the case would be forwarded to the Health Department for further action.

There you have it. Some don'ts can land you in trouble. Smoking is best done in the comfort of your own home, outdoors, of course.

The north-east monsoon season has started in Malaysia, so if you are visiting this part of the world at this time of the year, may I suggest you also pack an umbrella or you could buy one here. Umbrellas are plentiful here and are not too pricey too. You can find them at most shops and shopping complexes. The foldable type would be more convenient to have around. A raincoat might work better though umbrellas are more widely used and easily available if you need one.

AirAsia moves Corporate HQ from KL to Jakarta

It's not a rumour. The news is out. AirAsia is moving its Corporate HQ from KL to Jakarta.

Tony Fernandes, AirAsia’s group chief executive, confirmed the decision in Tokyo Thursday, saying the move is an effort to upgrade his company’s image as a regional Southeast Asian airline rather than just a Malaysian carrier.

AirAsia chief conferred CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire)

Congratulations!

AirAsia CEO Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes has added another feather to his cap - he received the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) award from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.

Fernandes' CBE was attributed to his “services to promote commercial and educational links” between the United Kingdom and Malaysia.
