A Celebration - Selamat Hari Raya 2019

Malaysia has a multi-racial population of which more than 60% are Malays who are also Muslims.

Today, June 5, Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Fitr which we here in Malaysia refer to as Hari Raya.

Eid al-Fitr is one of the most important festivals or celebrations for Muslims, following the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk.

I wish all Muslim Malaysians and Muslims around the world "Selamat Hari Raya".

Malaysian Ramadan Food Bazaar

Ramadan bazaar in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur - The Star

Malaysia is sometimes known as a food heaven. The multi-ethnic society sees to it that one will be totally spoilt for choice when it comes to food. To top that, no matter what time of the day or night you need to satisfy that hunger, food is just around the corner.

If you are a visitor to this country, do not hesitate to try the street food here. Street food is not only cheap, quick and safe, they are, in most cases, the more authentic when it comes to taste, be it Malay food, Chinese or Indian food.

If you are here this time of the year, i.e., Ramadan (the fasting month), a further treat awaits you. Not to be missed in the evening is the Ramadan bazaar - usually located in parking lots or along the main street and with the trademark huge colourful outdoor umbrellas.

The Ramadan bazaar is a bustling food bazaar with all kinds of cooked food for people to break their fast in the evening. The Ramadan bazaar is also popular with the non-fasting public as well as tourists. The food choice here is truly amazing, from sweet dates to a variety of local cakes to rice and noodles, chicken curry, chicken rendang, grilled mackerel and stingray, rose syrup drinks and fruit juices, all kinds of fruits (durian included) - this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are more, lots more! You simply have to experience a Ramadan Bazaar when you are here!

A Chinese New Year video with a Message for Everyone by BERNAS

Here is a made-in-Malaysia video but with an international message.

Every year, just before or during major festivals such as Hari Raya Puasa and Chinese New Year (not sure about Deepavali), there were videos made with an important message. Petronas used to sponsor these memorable and impactful videos made by Malaysia's very own award-winning art and film director, Yasmin Ahmad, before her untimely demise in 2009. Since then, no festival video has come close in comparison.

However, this year we have a surprise. BERNAS, a Malaysian company in the padi and rice industry, came up with a video that strikes a chord not only across races, states but even across the world. Well done, Bernas!

A must-see video.. one even God Tube has picked up.
