PETALING JAYA: Those who buy Malaysian Airline tickets worth a minimum of RM1,000 or on MasterCard packages are a step closer to owning a Volkswagen Beetle.

The “Fly and Win” contest requires participants to list down the preferred rankings of their favourite destination operated by Malaysia Airlines.

Malaysia Airlines senior general manager sales and marketing Datuk Bernard Francis said the contest was the company’s way of saying “thank you” to its customers.

“With a single transaction of air tickets or MASholidays packages, an entry form is given to card holders and entries matching listed rankings of all seven destination will be shortlisted as winners,” he said in a statement.

Entry forms are available at Malaysia Airlines ticketing offices and corporate website, and travel agents.

The New Landmark in Penang - The Goddess of Mercy Pavilion

In George Town, Penang, more than 13,000 people attended the consecration and opening of the 20-storey pavilion over the Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin) statue at the Kek Lok Si Temple in Air Itam here yesterday.

The pavilion, measuring 82.7m from the base to the tip, features a three-tiered pagoda-style roof and is supported by 16 granite pillars.

Each pillar consists of 40 circular blocks of 45cm-thick granite and has a circumference of 2.1m.

Among them were some 3,000 venerable religious leaders of the Mahayana, Theravada and Vajrayana traditions from Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Cambodia, Thailand and Bhutan.

Typewriter Brings $254,500 at Auction

Several years ago, my office scrapped a number of electric IBM typewriters. Perhaps we should have kept them and have them auctioned 50 years later for six figures each just like the typewriter in the picture.

The difference of course is, this Olivetti manual machine was owned by Pulitzer Prize author, Cormac McCarthy.

Mr. McCarthy said he bought it in 1963 for $50 and used it to type all his novels, including a couple that won a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award, sold Friday at Christie’s to an unidentified American collector for $254,500, more than 10 times its high estimate of $20,000. Proceeds of the auction will be donated to the Santa Fe Institute, a nonprofit interdisciplinary scientific research organization.
