It is sad that amid this air of festivity of thanksgiving, renewing family ties, turkey dinners and all, something like the terror attacks incident in Mumbai has to happen. CNN reported at least 85 dead and 200 wounded. However, as at this morning, the death toll has risen to 100 and the wounded, 314.




A TV station reported that terrorists have hit a fifth location--a hospital in addition to a train station. A van drove up and opened fire.

It was also reported that terrorists were rounding up US and UK passport-holders.

Memories...

Have you heard of anyone losing a phone memory card and that by accident? Or perhaps you have personally experienced it?

I have a girlfriend who has taken some shots of an important family function and when she was ready to download the pictures, found the memory card missing. She has no idea when it had gone missing.

It is a good thing that memory cards are easy to replace but unfortunately, memories captured on film (for lack of a better term) are irreplaceable.

If you are dependent on your cellphone for picture-taking, you may want to take extra precaution because I hear some cellphones have weaker design in the area of memory card storage.

Yoga Aside

Life is about choices and the choices we make affect the way we live - from what to wear for the day, the route we take to work, where to park your car today, what to eat for breakfast, to being nice to everyone in the office, and so forth.

These are just the mundane actions we take on auto mode. Yes, they still are decisions if you think about it. Sometimes, we add a little zest to our life with bigger decisions such as a change in career path, or house-buying and with it the associated decisions. Yes, even choosing area rugs can be quite daunting at times.

On a serious note, aren't we glad to have this freedom to choose? Yoga aside.

Penang World Heritage Site not in jeopardy, afterall

In my post several days ago about the possibility of George Town (Penang) losing its UNESCO World Heritage site status, we are now assured that "George Town’s World Heritage Site status is not in jeopardy as the upcoming high-rise hotels in the area were approved with UNESCO’s knowledge," said a former state exco member.

Last Saturday night, thousands of Malaysians and foreign tourists witnessed the official awarding of the UNESCO World Heritage Site to George Town and Malacca at a colourful ceremony at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.

The award arrived on an elephant, was passed to UNESCO’s regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific Director, Hubert J. Gijzen, who then handed it to Malaysia’s UNESCO national committee president, Education Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammud-din Tun Hussein. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, then received the award from Hishammuddin.

Yoga is not for Muslims

Yoga is a popular form of exercise and is practised by people of all ethnic groups.

On Saturday, the National Fatwa Council, Malaysia's Islamic body, declared that yoga is prohibited in Islam and Muslims are banned from practising it saying it had elements of Hinduism that could erode the faith of Muslims.

Atlas of The Real World

The map of the world above is what we are familiar with - the size of each country is correctly shaped as how we know it. With a whole bunch of things going on around us, it would be nice, in a way, if we are able to tell what happens where mostly or who is screwing it up for the world, etc. Well, now we can.

There is this new book titled Atlas of the Real World that has 366 digitally-modified maps depicting the nations of the world not by their physical size but by their demographic importance on a range of subjects. Basically mapping the way we live.

Below are a few interesting cartograms, as they are called. I'm surprised that Malaysia and Greece have been noted as countries with the most motorcycles and mopeds. Read on..

The size of each nation indicated the total number of motorcycles and mopeds there. The largest number of motorcycles per person is in Malaysia and Greece - where there are more than one for every five people - closely followed by Thailand, Cambodia and Italy.

Mustard-roasted Potatoes, anyone?

It's been raining the past few days. The good side of it is, it cools down the temperature, otherwise it can get rather unbearable here what with the high humidity.

The weather is beautiful today. Beautiful as in the sun is up, the sky is blue and today being Saturday. Saturday! Yes! I went to Old Town Petaling Jaya on a mission. This part of PJ is still a bit kampong (rural) and you can sometimes catch chickens picking food by the roadside.

I saw a scene that made me gasp. It was too faraway to be captured on film though. It was a flock of birds - three turkeys, a few hens and a dark, tall and handsome cockerel. What a sight. They were all hanging out together, something like a multi-ethnic group of human friends. Cool!

Back at home, online now, and the first link on Twitter brought me to this wonderful potato dish/snack. You know I don't review food here but I just can't resist posting this for you - easy-to-prepare mustard-roasted potatoes. I'm thinking great as a snack with a long cool drink or just vegging out in front of the tv. I'm posting the pictures here but you can go here for the recipe. Enjoy the day!

Pinhole Glasses - Have You Heard?

The other day, I met Jenn, a former colleague, at a function and was surprised at how well she looked. I thought she swopped her glasses for contacts but apparently her vision has improved so much, she no longer needs glasses.

She said the secret lies in a pair of pinhole glasses that she recently acquired from a friend's recommendation. I have never heard of pinhole glasses so she clued me in a little. At the same time, I had to find out for myself how a simple pair of eyeglasses could cause such a major transformation. Now I can share it with you.

Firstly, this is how pinhole glasses look like. Pinhole glasses or pinhole eyeglasses, consist of precision-manufactured lightweight perforated plastic lenses, inset into standard metal or plastic spectacle frames. These glasses are ideal for sufferers of refractive eye disorders, the elderly and computer users.

A little about how these pinhole glasses work. In a healthy eye, light rays are focused into a single point on the light sensitive retina at the back of the eyeball. Depending on the type of refractive disorder endured, less healthy eyes focus light rays either in front of or behind the retina, casting a 'blur circle' on the retina itself. The pinholes on the surface of the plastic lenses of the pinhole glasses effectively narrow down the aperture of the eye's pupil, thus allowing a narrower beam of light through to the eye lens with a greater depth of field. The narrow beam casts a smaller 'blur circle' on the retina, improving your vision.

It seems achieving perfect vision is possible. Probably, Jenn's vision is near perfect as she is going about her business without the aid of prescription glasses. She drives too.

Looks like pinhole glasses really do work. At $14.99 a pair, it's really a steal. The price aside, they are not bad-looking, they are light weight, durable and one pair suits all situations. You can watch tv and read a book with the same pair. Talk about convenience.

Penang - A UNESCO World Heritage Site no more?

Two Malaysian cities were designated UNESCO World Heritage sites. One is the city of Malacca, the other is Penang. Now, Penang is in a dilemma of possibly losing the status should they go ahead with the approved plan of building four high-rise hotels which would be in the heritage core and buffer zones and which violate the guidelines approved by the World Heritage Committee (WHC).

Under stringent heritage guidelines, a maximum height of 18m or roughly five storeys was set for new buildings in the two zones.

Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng, said, “Now, we’re caught in a conundrum. If we allow the buildings to go ahead, we may risk the status, but if we stop the buildings, we could be sued for hundreds of millions which will definitely bankrupt the local council."

Steve Wozniak, Geek Of The Month

I just read an interview with Steve Wozniak, Youbentmywookie.com's first Geek Of The Month. This is Part 1 of a two-part interview.

Steve Wozniak, (I'm sure you recognise the name), is co-founder of Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.). He is also known as the "Other Steve" (Steve Jobs being the other one) as well as other nicknames including "The Woz", "Wonderful Wizard of Woz" and "iWoz".

Other than autobiographies and biographies, I find that interviews too provide some knowledge about significant individuals, people who have impacted the world, our lives. These accounts give us the whys and the wherefores of the events, situations and personalities that we would not have known otherwise.

15sen reduction in fuel prices

Oh goodie! Effective midnight last night, fuel price has been reduced by 15sen.
The pump price of RON97 petrol is now at RM2 a litre from RM2.15 while the retail price of RON92 petrol and diesel is RM1.90 a litre. In line with this reduction, supermarkets and hypermarkets have also marked down many essential items.

Another item that went down, down as in buried are these locally-made biscuits which have been found to be melamine-tainted. All 12,000kg of various types ended up in landfills.

Buddha Has Returned

I read with interest the newspaper article about a 15-year-old Nepalese boy meditating beneath a pipal tree for months without food and water. This was sometime back.

Then last week, I saw a documentary on tv about him. The film showed him sitting beneath the tree, still, eyes closed. The place was crowded with pilgrims who came to the dense jungle of southern Nepal to worship this 15-year-old boy who has been hailed as a new Buddha.

Devotees claim that Ram Bomjon, who is silently meditating beneath a tree, has not eaten or drunk anything since he sat down at his chosen spot six months ago.

This is exactly how he looked like.



Three years have gone by.


The teenage boy revered by many as a reincarnation of Buddha sat silently in the jungle as he blessed his devotees Wednesday with a light tap on the head, which they consider the touch of the divine.

His face was still, his long hair spilled over his white robe, and he never said a word.

Singapore Zoo Incident

Heard over the radio this morning about a horrifying incident which happened in the Singapore Zoo in which a cleaner was mauled to death by two white tigers. The incident was photographed as well as captured on video by holiday-makers. The news is on the frontpage of the Straits Times of Singapore.

Eye-witnesses said they had earlier seen the victim shouting and throwing things as he walked by the crocodile enclosure, a short distance from the tiger enclosure.

Eye on Malaysia in Malacca

The Eye on Malaysia after being in Kuala Lumpur for more than a year has finally found a permanent home in the historical city and a World Heritage site of Malacca. It was launched amid pomp and splendour last Friday, November 7, 2008. A fireworks display enthralled the 10,000-strong crowd of locals and tourists.


This 60m ferris wheel with 42 air-conditioned gondolas is located at the mouth of the Malacca river on a 1.6ha leisure park. The Eye on Malaysia is among three main attractions on the park. There will be a 30m by 60m water screen, tipped to be the largest in the region. It would display scenes of Malacca’s landmarks. This will be ready by December.

The third attraction would be a 4D space exhibition which would give patrons a feel of outer space. This will be operational by February next year.

Air Asia Strikes Again

In case you have not had the chance to read the headlines yet, and if you intend to travel second or early third quarter of next year, this piece of AirAsia news may be for you.

Air Asia is doing it again! They are offering 500,000 free seats with no fuel surcharge. Booking period is from today, Wed, until Sunday. Travel date for the free seats is from June 22 to Oct 24 next year.

In fact, all AirAsia and AirAsia X passengers will now no longer have to pay for the fuel surcharge for all local and international flights. However, should fuel prices increase in the future, the fuel surcharge would be reintroduced. Fuel surcharge can set a traveller back an average of RM47 per person, so there is some savings there.

Passengers would now only have to pay for the fare, airport tax and administration fee when flying with Air Asia, and, of course, the check-in baggage handling fee.

Talk about baggage, what's the biggest number of bags that you have ever checked in? Anything close to the number that Mariah Carey and her husband, Nick Cannon, brought along on their 3-night visit to London? Between them, they had 20 bags.

But I digress. So, if travel is on your cards for next year, make it an AirAsia destination and book your free seat. You have until Sunday.

We communicate to understand one another. Sometimes, we don't need to, as body language can do just as well. Are there times, we don't want to know what happened or simply too afraid to ask? Or, do we prefer a little mystery in our life for that extra excitement?

Saturday morning I got up early, dressed quietly, made my lunch, grabbed the
dog, slipped quietly into the garage to hook the boat to the truck, and
backed out into a torrential downpour.

The wind was blowing 50 mph. I drove back into the garage, turned on the car
radio and discovered that the weather was going to be bad all day long.

I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I
cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different purpose in mind, and
whispered " The weather out there is horrible ! "

My loving wife of twenty years replied, " Can you believe my stupid husband
is out fishing in this crap ? "

I still don't know to this day whether she was joking, but I have given up
fishing.

I just had my lunch but this picture of a generous portion of a mixed sausage platter gets me hungry all over again.
















This mouth-watering dish is on the menu of Kuala Lumpur's newest branch of a German restaurant, Bavarian Bierhaus. The new outlet is located at Wisma UOA with the first one being at The Curve in Petaling Jaya.

When it comes to German cuisine, not only sausages, pork knuckles come to mind and they top the favourites at this restaurant. There are a few types to choose from and new at this outlet are the Crispy Knuckle with Pineapple Gravy and the Crispy Knuckle with Thyme Infusion.

Pork lovers’ must-try at the outlet is also the Pork Ribs, which is another hearty meal like the knuckles.

Pretzels, who can forget pretzels. The pretzels are fresh and aromatic. They can be eaten with Odatza, a savoury dip made from soft cheese, garlic, cream and pepper.

Horse Riding as a Hobby

Horses are a rare sight here in Kuala Lumpur. I mean we do not see them in main thoroughfares like in Canada, for instance. We do not have farms here that require horses.

The only places we are able to see a horse or two are in the zoo or at a horse riding school, the latter, most of us would not ever think about visiting unless one is into horse riding.

Besides obtaining membership to an equestrian club, horse riding involves the right apparel and equipment such as riding boots, riding breeches, riding helmets, show clothes, horse blankets, saddles and much more. I hear English saddles are much sought after.

In temperate climes, autumn heralds the dawn of the best riding time of the year. The days are cooler, the flies are fewer and breathtaking fall colors add up to great riding experiences. If trail riding is your main interest, the trails will be more beautiful than ever.

Over lunch the other day, my co-workers and I got to talking about going places and what are our dream destinations.

A friend related that he lost his wallet (of cards and cash) the very first day in Rome. Oh dear!, I thought to myself and that's the place, plus the rest of Italy, that tops my list of places to visit. LOL!

Las Vegas is a popular choice. Those who have been there sang praises about the place and the abundance of accommodation. Hotels las vegas are aplenty, that's what they noticed.

A Home Away from Home

One of the good things of Malaysia's colonial heritage is the big vacation homes our colonial ancestors left behind.

If you were to visit holiday places like Penang, Frasers Hill, Cameron Highlands and even Port Dickson, and looking for a place to stay, you would be able to find vacation homes for rental just like those Outer Banks rentals in North Carolina.

Someone I know used to own a vacation home outfit and it even has its own private beach. It's on the west coast, so sunset is truly a sight to behold.

Sex by the Fence

I know, it is Friday and we are supposed to be doing a quiz but I simply can't resist this one. Too funny! In fact, it is too funny to be dirty - Enjoy!


The husband leans over and asks his wife, 'Do you remember the first time we had s e x together over fifty years ago? We went behind the village tavern where you leaned against the back fence and I made love to you.'

Yes, she says, 'I remember it well.'

OK,' he says, 'How about taking a stroll around there again and we can do it for old time's sake?'

Oh Jim, you old devil, that sounds like a crazy, but good idea!'

A police officer sitting in the next booth heard their conversation and, having a chuckle to himself, he thinks to himself, I've got to see these two old-timers having s e x against a fence. I'll just keep an eye on them so there's no trouble. So he follows them.

The elderly couple walks haltingly along, leaning on each other for support aided by walking sticks. Finally, they get to the back of the tavern and make their way to the fence. The old lady lifts her skirt and the old man drops his trousers. As she leans against the fence, the old man moves in.. Then suddenly they erupt into the most furious s e x that the policeman has ever seen. This goes on for about ten minutes while both are making loud noises and moaning and screaming. Finally, they both collapse, panting on the ground.

The policeman is amazed. He thinks he has learned something about life and old age that he didn't know.

After about half an hour of lying on the ground recovering, the old couple struggle to their feet and put their clothes back on. The policeman, is still watching and thinks to himself, this is truly amazing, I've got to ask them what their secret is.

So, as the couple passes, he says to them,' Excuse me, but that was something else. You must've had a fantastic s e x life together. Is there some sort of secret to this?'

Shaking, the old man is barely able to reply, 'Fifty years ago that wasn't an electric fence.'
