7.8-magnitude Earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia

Breaking news:
A 7.8-magnitude earthquake has been recorded in Indonesia off the coast of north western Sumatra according to CNN. It has been reported as 46km or 28.6 miles down and struck 125 miles off the coast of Sibolga. The quake happened at 5:15am local time.

Local tsunami warning has been raised in Indonesia. Advice from experts is to stay away from the coastline/beach. A 7.8-magnitude is considered a major earthquake capable of causing considerable damage. So far, there's no report of damages or injuries.

    I wonder if the effects were felt over here. 7.8 magnitude is a big one.

    CNN later reported that people in Malaysia and Singapore felt it. I was up then but did not feel it. People living along the coast must be the ones feeling the tremor.

  4. SK, considering the depth of the quake, people like us living inland will hardly feel it. Hopefully, the damage is minimal. There are worse disasters elsewhere in the world right now - floods, landslides, mine-explosions, even human-inflicted ones like the suicide bombings in a few places.

  7. Poor Indonesia. They just keep getting hit hard. Since Malaysia is in the area, I always think of you when one of these natural disaster reports comes from Indonesia.

  8. MM, aww... so sweet! Come to think of it, I too think of you and PandaB whenever I read about typhoon and hurricane in the Tokyo area. I guess, our minds are wired that way.

    Yeah, Malaysia is so close to Indonesia that we do get affected when the quakes are severe. In fact, there has been reports of people in Penang feeling it yesterday.
