Closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics - Aug 24

I feel the Beijing Olympics series will not be complete here without an entry on the Closing ceremony so below are some pictures from the Beijing2008 site. If you missed it, you can read the detailed summary here: The Closing Ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games.

And of course, the Medal tally is important for some. A peek at the big winners:

  1. I enjoyed the closing ceremony, but not as much as the opening. Don't know if it's either because it wasn't as extravagant, or that after all these days we've been accustomed to this, or both. But nonetheless, the part where the flame went out to the tune of the children singing 'You and Me' was nice. As well as the giant flower from the tower.

Respect to all the athletes from all countries - whether they came first or last.

It's a wonder though, that this Olympics the US has decided that the total number of medals, and not gold, is what should be calculated - as opposed to what has and is being practiced by the rest of the world.

Enjoyed the pics and your Olympic series!

The closing ceremony was really good esp the human pagoda scene..loved it! The presentation for the handover of the games to London was somewhat disappointing..somehow, it lacked the unique cultural/artistic element you see in the Beijing Games but it's too early to judge anyway. We shall see in another four years time.

  4. Pete, I too enjoyed the Opening ceremony more than the Closing ceremony. I think this is the norm - more splendour and grandeur at the Opening. Still, both deserve our applause.

I was wondering, if US had more gold medals and China had more total medals, would the new system be implemented?! hmm..

  5. MBL, I too enjoyed the memory tower or the human pagoda as you put it. I like the giant ribbons being raised, reminiscent of a Chinese lantern. London sure has big shoes to fill, I think.

  6. MB, that could be a tough act to follow though not impossible. They would probably need to engage movie directors to match Zhang YiMou's imagination and creativity. Looking forward to it - London Olympics in 2012.

  7. I missed the opening ceremony, but all those nasty "behind the scenes" stories about it that came out afterward kind of ruined it for my anyway.

    That closing ceremony was awesome!

  9. MM, for me, the opening ceremony was much better than the closing ceremony. I'm sure there will be videos on sale soon but in the meantime, check out those on YouTube.

All those "behind the scenes" stories? Are you referring to the so-called fake fireworks?

Frankly, I don't understand why people are making such a big fuss about it. It was actually announced during the opening broadcast that they are computer-generated for the live broadcast. It's only the fireworks outside leading to the Bird's Nest that are CG.
