MasterCard Cardholders in Malaysia spent US$74.2mil during the first weekend of MMSC

The Star today reported that MasterCard cardholders from Malaysia and overseas spent a total of US$74.2mil during the first weekend of the Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival 2010 (MMSC), which was from July 30 to Aug 1, 2010.

In a statement, MasterCard Worldwide said this was an increase of 37% as compared to US$54.1mill spent last year during the first weekend of MMSC 2009, which was from July 4 to July 6, 2009.

It said the total number of transactions made by both Malaysian and overseas cardholders saw a 9% increase from last year, totalling 956,550.

Could one of the reasons be the timing this year of the Hari Raya next month? The Malaysian Mega Sale Carnival this year is perfectly timed for shopping in preparation of the festivities. This annual carnival is from July 24 right through Sep 15 this year.

  4. T, perhaps we need to look on the positive side as in more people are rich thus they are shopping. No?

SK, everyone who has shopped using the MasterCard is part of the statistics. Me included.

We'll need to wait for the Visa card report. I have no doubt the trend could be similar.
